CONATEL, Haiti’s official telecommunications regulator, announced in a press briefing today that they are officially launching the SIM Card Awareness and Identification Campaign throughout Haiti.
The campaign aims to end to the circulation of unidentified SIM cards in Haiti by requiring all telecommunications operators to uniquely identify each customer on their network.
The identification system will require that a customer’s picture be taken in addition to recording information found on their identification card.
According to CONATEL, SIM cards will no longer be activated without first being uniquely identified on the network operator’s database.
The program is expected to take about two months to fully implement across the country.
